New Balance has announced footwear created in collaboration with ISSEY MIYAKE.
This collaboration marks the first footwear project between the two brands, designed by ISSEY MIYAKE designer Satoshi Kondo, inspired by the concept of sensuous physicality and barefoot mobility. The MT10, a classic model from New Balance’s trail running series, is integrated with the design and color palette of ISSEY MIYAKE. This footwear’s design is in harmony with the notion of “natural and honest shape” in the theme of ISSEY MIYAKE Spring Summer 2024 collection, featuring lightweight feel and grounding comfort.
The campaign of this project is photographed by French photographer and artist Antoine Picard, centered around the theme of physicality.
The New Balance MT10 is a minimalist trail running shoe designed to provide the sensation of running barefoot while offering protection and traction for off-road running. It is part of New Balance’s Minimus series, which emphasizes minimal cushioning and a close-to-ground experience. First introduced in 2011, this model was developed in response to a growing interest in closer to barefoot running experiences and technology, aligning with the trend of minimalist running shoes at that time.
Looking closely at the design of the MT10, ISSEY MIYAKE worked extensively on its materials, color palette, and details, giving the classic model a new expression. The insole features a cobranded logo, and the shoes come with a special shoe case and an original shoe box.
The upper combines lightweight, breathable mesh with supple premium leather, and is equipped with thin cord-like shoelaces that balance minimalistic design with functionality. The vamp strap and foxing use abrasion-resistant rubber.
The midsole employs minimal cushioning but is firmed up to provide a platform suitable for offroad running.
The outsole is designed with a focus on grip and durability. It features protruding shapes to enhance traction on various terrains in both urban and natural environments, utilizing rubber made by Vibram for superior grip and durability.
The fit is snug to help prevent movement of the foot inside the shoe on uneven terrain. The oblique-shaped NL1 last with a wide toe box allows for spreading and movement of the toes. The low drop design of 4mm allows for a midfoot strike.
The overall design of the shoe is lightweight to maintain the sensation of barefoot running.
