Brand Focus: The Spotlight On Mulberry

4 minute read

Innovative and timeless, everyone wants to own a Mulberry. Iconic and resolutely British, just hearing the name and saying it is enough to excite not just fans of the brand, but also those who admire it from a distance. The Mulberry look is instantly recognisable. The “It” bags such as the Bayswater, Lily and Alexa consistently strike a balance between being innovative and covetable, and command cult status but not at the expense of being timelessness and quality which the brand is synonymous for. Read on as we shine the spotlight on Mulberry.

First beginnings

Mulberry started off as a family-owned company and was founded in 1971 by Roger Saul and his mother Joan in Somerset, England. Roger’s passion for leather was influenced by his father, who worked for Clark’s shoemakers.

Mulberry’s first products — plaited belts, binocular cases and chokers were set in motion from the family’s kitchen in 1971 with just £500. The brand’s name was derived from the trees that he would pass every morning on his way to school. Saul’s sister, Rosemary, designed the Mulberry tree logo.

In 1975, Saul sold his first Mulberry collection from a stall in London’s Portobello Road Market.

The Rise of The Mulberry Bags

In its earliest days, Mulberry was known for its leather belts. With the success of these accessories, it led to the development of more wearables such as clothing and handbags. Mulberry pieces reflect a distinctive style that is quintessentially English tailored, crisp, and timeless, with a nod to the countryside. Mulberry bags — particularly the Bayswater, was the label’s first game-changing tote. This “It” bag captured the hearts of the world and soared to every fashion maven’s must-have list.

The Mulberry bags are more than just classics — they’re built to work and designed to suit every woman’s lifestyle. By adding functional details to these timeless beauties, it is one way that the label continues to merge fashion with function.

In order to keep up with history, Mulberry’s bags are made in the United Kingdom, with each bag going through rigorous testing and quality control checks before meeting the brand’s highest standards.
