Brand Focus: A Spotlight on Alexander Wang

Brand Focus: A Spotlight on Alexander Wang

3 minute read

For more than a generation, Alexander Wang is the epitome of casual-luxe, sports-infused lifestyle that represents the lowbrow of the 1990s. Remember those leather miniskirts and ankle boots? That’s Wang. Those insanely stylish studded grained leather holdalls and bucket bags? Also Wang.

Wang created a household name for himself when he was in his twenties and he made himself indispensable to the world of design — not just fashion, as he doesn’t limit himself to creating collections only for apparel, bags and shoes.

Early Beginnings

Born and raised in San Francisco, California, Taiwanese-American Alexander Wang was interested in design and fashion from a young age. At 15, he had he opportunity to travel to Great Britain and attend a summer design program at Central Saint Martins. When he turned 18, he decided to move to New York City and attend the Parsons Design School as an intern.

Wang gained experience in the fashion industry by interning at various magazines such as Vogue and Teen Vogue. In addition, he also did an apprenticeship for Marc Jacobs and Derek Lam. However, the young Wang quit studying to fulfil his desire of opening his own label. He launched a cashmere sweaters’ line bearing his name on the label. The sweaters were initially sold going from door-to-door and very soon, he gained recognition when his story appeared in the “New York Times”.

The brand was officially launched in 2005 and in 2007, Wang introduced his casual wear collection on a catwalk in New York, which was warmly accepted. The fashion show allowed him to contract his designs with more than 200 over boutiques and retail stores internationally. Soon, he introduced a handbag collection.
