The Spotlight on Paul Smith

The Spotlight on Paul Smith

3 minute read

Over the years, the Paul Smith brand has become a staple in contemporary men’s fashion, synonymous with classic British tailoring and style. The label has provided unique looks that diversify wardrobes for over 40 years. Today, with over 14 collections, Paul Smith has never looked stronger, going from strength to strength with every season.

The brand can be easily distinctive by its signature multi-coloured stripes, with designs sold at flagships in Paris, London, New York and Tokyo, and in 70 countries and 3,000 retail doors. The brand currently rolls out several related lines, including PS by Paul Smith and Jeans Collection.

History Of The Paul Smith Brand

With no career plans or qualifications, Paul Smith was propelled into a menial job at his local clothing warehouse in Nottingham, which he had no interest in. Meanwhile, with a passion for sports, cycling, in particular, spurred Paul into pursuing a career in the sport until an accident happened when he suffered a career-ending injury at age 17.

Upon his recovery, he made some new friends who introduced him to a pub which was at that time popular with art and design students. It was here that gave Paul an insight into the creative world and to become a fashion designer.

With the help of his then-girlfriend, now-wife Pauline Denver, Paul opened his first shop in Notthingham in 1970. In 1976, he debuted his first menswear collection in Paris under his namesake label. Paul’s second London store was opened in 1982, with his third in 1983 and fourth in 1987 — the same his first New York nbutique was unveiled.

Paul’s first women’s collection was showed at London Fashion Week in 1998 and has since expanded into accessories, footwear childrenswear and homeware.

What Sets Paul Smith Apart

It is evident that Paul is a tastemaker with an enthusiasm for eclectic cultural references and the idiosyncratic combinations of colour and pattern applied with understatement. Paul Smith clothes are extraordinary but specially designed for everyday wear. Whether paired with a cotton t-shirt and trainers, cashmere knit or with a sharp white shirt and leather shoes, the tailoring will be sure to unite any look.

Signature Pieces

Stripes have been central to Paul’s design work since the company’s early days. The Signature Stripe appeals as an eye-catching print or as hidden details, which originated from Paul’s experimentation of coloured yarn. Here are some signature pieces that you should own from the brand.
